I do contract work in post-secondary education, and have the opportunity to meet some bright, articulate, and interesting students. Many have a clear sense of direction and purpose, which was established several years before they started college or university. Which brings me to wonder if the love of, and appreciation 
for, heritage structures begins much earlier in life? We spend much of our time trying to convince grown-ups how important this is, often with little success, so perhaps we need to divert some energies to speaking with younger people in primary and secondary schools.
